FreightWaves recently conducted several surveys about CB radio usage among truckers. The police version of ten-codes is officially known as the APCO Project 14 Aural Brevity Code. In the past, truckers often used CB radios as a way to communicate everything from where Smokey was hiding and waiting to hand out speeding tickets, to the location of accidents on the road, to complaints about their companies, marriage woes, and more. QSO is the Q-signal for an on-the-air conversation, like Ziggy and Elroy are having, or like the contacts Elroy is describing with the European stations. Ten-codes, officially known as ten signals, are brevity codes used to represent common phrases in voice communication, particularly by law enforcement and in Citizens Band (CB) radio transmissions. It is a very power-efficient mode of transmission that is commonly used QRP, a Q-signal referring to low power or reduced power transmission. CW stands for continuous wave, the transmission mode used with International Morse Code to tap out letters and numbers. CQ is a call that means calling any station, frequently used on the HF bands where you are trying to make contact with anyone anywhere. That is, the transmissions will pass through the ionosphere and travel into space rather than returning to earth to be received by a DX station. Particularly with the higher frequency HF bands like 10-meters and 15-meters, the band may not be open unless solar conditions are very active and the ionosphere is densely charged. sdrawkcaB Radio Scanners, CB Radio, Amateur Radio 2. A radio band is said to be open when it is reflecting from the ionosphere and allowing long distance contacts by ionosphere skip, or repeated reflections between ionosphere and ground of the radio signals. The first time you get on Zello or use a CB Radio it may sound like users are speaking a different language, one that is made up of a mix of English words and numbers but with a whole new set of meanings that are hard to interpret.
